Breed History

Country of Orgin

France

Founder

Madame Eugenie Bernhardt

Brief History

Bernhardt wanted a white meat quality rabbit. She started by breading checkered giants (Geant Papillion Francais) to white flemish giants and white viennas. After not getting the results she desired she conculted with breeder Jeanne J. Lemarie. She decided to work primarily with just the checkered giants, and breed to remove markings by selecting only the lightewst marked animals. It took over 500 breeding to finally get down to what we have today as the blanc de hotot.

Year of ARBA Acceptance

1978 at the ARBA convention in Saginaw, MI

Conservation Status

The Blanc de Hotot is a Threatened breed.
